ARoS Public Community Hall

ARoS Art Museum

Transforming the solitary art museum into a social playground.

Overview

At the ARoS Art Museum in Denmark, we asked a simple question: Why is looking at art such a quiet, solitary activity? To break the silence, we transformed an entire floor into a "community hall" dedicated to social interaction. Through three distinct interactive installations, visitors don't just view the collection—they remix it, debate it, and even track their own physical gaze, turning passive observation into active, "smart fun."

“Each ARoS Public experience invites visitors to create, share, converse and collaborate through the museum’s collection.”

The Details

The goal was to build a gym for the imagination. We designed a suite of tools that put the collection directly into visitors' hands. In The Art of Creativity, guests use portraits to create digital collages. In The Art of Commentary, pairs record audio debates about specific works. Finally, The Art of Looking utilizes advanced eye-tracking sensors to visualize exactly how a visitor views a painting—revealing the subconscious patterns of their own curiosity.

“Traditional museums are not designed to encourage social interactions. We explicitly wanted to change that.”
