Urbanology Traveling Laboratory

BMW / Guggenheim

Building the ideal city, one choice at a time.

Overview

Urbanology is a massive, multiplayer game that puts the future of the city in your hands. Part of the BMW Guggenheim Lab, this installation asks players to face real-world dilemmas—from gentrification to sustainability—and vote on solutions. As participants place game pieces to register their choices, a custom algorithm analyzes the collective data, revealing which real-world city aligns with the group's unique vision.

The Details

We designed Urbanology to make the complex trade-offs of urban planning tangible. Players aren't just answering a survey; they are physically navigating a grid of conflicting priorities. For example: Would you accept a casino in exchange for free public transit? By turning policy into play, the installation transforms a solitary opinion into a communal debate, helping visitors understand the consequences of the choices that shape our metropolises.
