Overview
A groundbreaking exploration of multilateral diplomacy and international cooperation
UN Geneva is the headquarters for global humanitarian efforts and cooperation around the world. Philanthropist Ivan Pictet and the Foundation Portail Des Nations tasked a multi-firm design team, including Local Projects, to envision an innovative welcome center that highlights the UN's importance in solving global issues.
The result gives visitors a sense of the daily rhythms of multilateral diplomacy and international cooperation in Geneva, shares how collective expertise and knowledge address the world's major challenges, and culminates by inviting visitors to participate in a real multilateral negotiation themselves.
The Language Experience
Without shared words, no agreement is possible. We give visitors a sense of the daily rhythms of multilateral diplomacy and international cooperation in Geneva, share how the UN facilitates dialogue among 193 nations and how multilateral agreements impact your daily life, and explore the founding principles of the UN Charter.
The Knowledge Experience
An invitation to understand how knowledge becomes collective action. In this “control room” set, visitors encounter how the UN brings together “the head and heart,” contrasting an enormous amount of real-time global data with first-person accounts from field officers.
They’ll discover how collective expertise and knowledge address the world's major challenges - proof that multilateralism works to address global challenges and promote a more peaceful, sustainable, and equitable world.
The Response Experience
This invitation to experience firsthand what it means to act together gives visitors the chance to vote on global priorities themselves. In a room modeled on famous UN assembly halls, visitors are presented with global challenges, and take on the role of a Member State and participate in a real multilateral negotiation. They’ll negotiate, debate, forge a compromise, and discover that their vote can change the world.
